   Born 2 January 1873 in Alençon, Normandy, ninth child of Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin (themselves later canonized).

2. tonsured — 1888

   Entered the Carmel of Lisieux at age 15, having obtained special permission on a pilgrimage to Rome the previous year.

3. wrote

   Wrote the autobiographical manuscripts later compiled and published as Histoire d'une âme (Story of a Soul), articulating the "little way" of spiritual childhood.

4. died — 1897

   Died of tuberculosis on 30 September 1897 at the Carmel of Lisieux, aged 24.

5. other — 1925

   Canonized by Pope Pius XI on 17 May 1925; declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997.
