Margaret of Antioch

Life events

  1. martyred

According to her passio, Margaret (Marina), daughter of a pagan priest, was disowned for her Christian faith and tortured under the prefect Olybrius during the Diocletianic persecution. The legend recounts her swallowing by a dragon in prison and bursting forth unharmed — the episode that, in the medieval West, made her the patroness of women in childbirth. She was beheaded in Antioch.

  2. translated — 908

Relics venerated in Antioch were reportedly translated to Constantinople; portions later dispersed to Italy and elsewhere in the West, contributing to the wide medieval cult.
