Entered the Augustinian canons at the monastery of São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon, later transferring to Santa Cruz in Coimbra.

Ordained a priest as an Augustinian; took the name Anthony upon joining the Franciscans in 1220 at the Hermitage of São Antão dos Olivais in Coimbra.

Preached extensively across northern Italy and southern France against the Cathar and Albigensian movements; became one of the most renowned preachers of his age.

Died near Padua on June 13, 1231, aged 35. Canonized within the year by Pope Gregory IX.
